Since opening in 1895, the Grand Opera House in Belfast has has delivered
an unrivalled programme of entertainment, playing host to some of the greatest
names in theatre and music. The listed building was designed by Frank Matcham,
the celebrated architect who designed many other impressive theatres around
the UK.
In 2006, an extensive renovation project was undertaken, and saw the creation of the Baby Grand performance space together with extended foyers, stage wings, artist accommodation and access for customers with disabilities. The extension's striking, modern appearance caused a certain amount of controversy and mixed reviews as some felt that it was not in keeping with the original theatre however the improved facilities have been warmly received.
The Opera House has also a new restaurant and bar space, which is great for a pre-theatre meal or interval drinks.
