Linen Hall Library

This library is a unique institution located in both the physical and cultural centre of Belfast. It is the oldest library in Belfast and the last subscribing library in Ireland, renowned for its unparalleled Irish and Local Studies Collection.

The library was founded in 1788 by a group of artisans as the Belfast Reading Society and in 1792 it became the Belfast Society for Promoting Knowledge.

The Library is best known for its Irish and Local Studies Collection, which includes a wide range of specialisms in form and content, and notably the Northern Ireland Political Collection, with its own Reading Room, and the Theatre & Performing Arts Archive.

The Library has a significant Genealogy and Heraldry Collection, and one of the largest collections of Burns & Burnsiana outside Scotland.

The Library holds its own archives and those of others, along with literary manuscripts in its Archives and Manuscripts Collection.
