St George's Market

St George's Market is a superb Victorian covered market, near the river Lagan and the Waterfront Hall. There has been a friday market on the site since 1604, and the present building was built from 1890 to 1896, and is now one of Belfast’s oldest attractions.

In 1997, this fabulous listed building underwent a £4.5m refurbishment and is home to stalls where you can buy just about everything, from the finest gourmet foods to shoe laces and old buttons. As a result, people travel to the market from far and wide - enjoying the vibrant atmosphere where live jazz music and cookery demonstrations make for a colourful day out.

The Friday Variety market opens at 6am and carrys on to 2pm. Over 200 stalls set up shop, selling a massive range of wares, including old antiques, fresh fruit and organic vegetables. There is a top quality fish sections, where over 20 stalls collectively have the reputation for being the leading retail fish market in Ireland.

On Saturday, the City Food & Garden Market kicks off from around 9am and runs until 3pm, however you must get there early if you want to get the best produce. Local producers travel from all over Northern Ireland, bringing with them the freshest organic fruit and vegetables, award winning local cheeses, free range eggs and top quality meat and fish.

The market has won a number of recent awards, including being voted as one of the UK's top five markets by the National Association of British Market Authorities in 2006, and winning third place in the best markets category of the Observer Food Monthly/Waitrose Awards in 2004.

A free market bus runs every 20 minutes between the City Centre (outside Boots the Chemist, Donegall Place or HMV, Castle Place) and the market. Bus departs 8.00am on Friday and every 20 minutes thereafter. Bus departs 9.00am on Saturday and every 20 minutes thereafter.

The closest car parking is at the Hilton car park which is across the road from the market.
